Sunglasses

It is hard not to smile when the sun is out, but you shouldn't forget about the impact that UV rays can have on your eyesight. The right sunglasses can protect your eyes while you soak up plenty of sunshine. If you are considering prescription or non-prescription sunglasses, contact Dr. Goldberg at Giant Optical to book an appointment.

What are UV Rays?

The sun produces ultraviolet radiation known as UV rays that cannot be seen by human eyes. Some of those rays can reach our eyes, causing lasting damage. Long-term exposure to UV radiation can significantly increase your risk of developing cataracts. It can also cause retinal damage and macular generation. You may even experience a condition called photokeratitis, which is essentially a sunburn on your cornea.

Sunglasses Provide Preventative Care

You do not have to avoid the sun to keep your eyes healthy. Instead, you can prevent sun damage and protect your eyes by wearing a pair of sunglasses. It is important to remember that not all sunglasses offer the same level of protection. You should wear glasses capable of blocking 99% of UV rays. You should also opt for glasses with "UV 400" on the label. Glasses with this designation can block UV rays as small as 400 nanometers.

Your sunglasses should also protect you from the sun's glare. Look for sunglasses that are capable of blocking between 75 and 90% of visible light. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, you may want to wear sunglasses with polarized lenses. These lenses can filter out some types of glare, providing better protection for your eyes.

Finding the Right Sunglasses

We offer an impressive selection of sunglasses that are suitable for all needs. If you usually wear glasses, we can provide clip-on or wraparound glasses that can be placed over your normal lenses as needed. Alternatively, we can provide you with prescription sunglasses. We can give you sunglasses that correct your vision the same way your normal glasses do or glasses that naturally darken in bright light.

We are happy to answer your questions and help you find the best solution for your needs. While you can wear non-prescription sunglasses over contacts, we also offer contact lenses that block UV rays. You can even wear these lenses along with sunglasses to maximize your protection.
